Joshua Slocum (1844-1909?) was the first person to circumnavigate the world alone. He sailed Spray, his rebuilt sloop, from Boston in April 1895, and returned three years later after a 74000-km journey. His book Sailing Alone Around the World is a first-hand account of his remarkable voyage.
