Named in memory of W. W. Campbell (1862–1938), observational spectroscopist, director of the Lick Observatory (1901–1930), president of the University of California (1923–1930), president of the International Astronomical Union (1922–1925) and president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1931–1935).
