The long-distance swims of Lynne Cox (b. 1957), especially across the Bering Strait in near-freezing waters in 1987, have inspired the world. Her 2004 book Swimming to Antarctica contains beautifully worded descriptions of astronomical phenomena, such as the aurora borealis, witnessed during her nighttime swims.
