Named in honor of R. R. de Freitas Mourão {1935– }, astronomer at the National Observatory in Rio de Janeiro, known for his work on double stars, minor planets and comets. He has participated extensively in the discoverer’s program of observations of minor planets at the European Southern Observatory, is the author of several astronomical books and is the leader of the Foundation of the Brazilian Museum for Astronomy.
