Named in honor of William Liller, formerly Robert Wheeler Wilson Professor of Applied Astronomy at Harvard University, on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. A premier observer, he has made substantial contributions through observations of a broad range of astronomical objects and phenomena: planetary nebulae, minor planets, comets, novae, variable stars, globular clusters, X-ray sources, quasars, solar eclipses and stellar occultations. Now living in Chile, he has in recent years participated in the PROBLICOM survey and has discovered several novae. During the recent passage of Halley’s Comet he was a crucial member of the IHW Island Network. He has been a leader in astronomical education and an important supporter of amateur astronomy. His enthusiastic encouragement has been greatly appreciated by his colleagues and students. (M 12015) _ _.
