English experimental scientist Robert Hooke (1635-1703) is known for his law of elasticity, the spring balance, an escapement for clocks and a Universal Joint commonly used at the end of a propeller shaft. The name was suggested for this specific minor planet by D. Bowater in the BBC Word of Mouth competition.
