Named by the second and third discoverers in memory of the first, Arthur König (1895–1969), who succeeded Reinmuth {see planet  (1111)} in 1957 as the leader of the long-standing Heidelberg observing program on minor planets. An astrometrist known also for his work on stellar positions and proper motions, König also held a leading position in the astronomical department of the Zeiss company and was an authority on coordinate measuring engines.
