Named in memory of Edward Leonhard Fireman (1922–1990), on the staff of the Brookhaven National Laboratory during 1950–1956 and subsequently a physicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Best known for his pioneering measurements of radioactive isotopes to determine the cosmic-ray exposure ages of freshly fallen meteorites, Fireman applied the technique to lunar samples and debris from artificial satellites as well. He also developed a method for measuring the relationship of age and depth in cores of ice bored into Antarctica and Greenland and examined the implications for the earth’s climatic record over the last 200,000 years. Long interested in the experimental search for neutrinos, he was in recent years particularly involved in measuring the argon 37 produced in the chlorine and potassium detectors to a depth of 1.5 km in the Homestake Mine, South Dakota.
