Shosanbetsu, a village in Hokkaido with a population of about 1450, was established in 1909. The name of the village means “a river where the waterfall is flowing out” in the Ainu language of the former inhabitants of Hokkaido. The Shosanbetsu Observatory has a 0.65-m reflector. The name was suggested by Y. Sano.
