Named in honor of Daniel J. Scheeres (b. 1963), currently in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Iowa State University. Scheeres has pioneered the investigation of the dynamics of orbits close to small, irregularly shaped minor planets. His research has included studies of the short-term evolution and the long-term stability of orbits around radar-derived models of (4179) Toutatis and (4769) Castalia. His work has far-reaching implications for the operation of spacecraft orbiting minor planets, for the cosmogony of satellites of minor planets and for understanding the distribution of non-escaping impact ejecta on small bodies.
