Named in memory of Tsukamoto Akitake (1833–1885), a geographer who worked for both the Tokugawa and Meiji governments. He recommended that the Japanese government adopt the Gregorian calendar to replace the lunisolar calendar. The government accepted his advice, and Japan adopted the Gregorian calendar on 1873 Jan. 1. (M 34352) _ _.
