Thomas Braidwood (1715-1806) was a Scottish teacher of the deaf, who founded Britain's first ‘Academy for the Deaf and Dumb’ in Edinburgh in 1760. He later moved the school to London and continued this work until his death. He developed his own interactive techniques for teaching.
