Jean-Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793), was a French astronomer, mathematician and freemason. In 1759 he calculated an orbit for the next appearance of Halley's comet and in 1771 he published his essay “Sur les inégalités de la lumičre des satellites de Jupiter”.
