Honoring the Gods

27 Jun 2016, 04:05 am

VenusI’m trying to focus on developing my Venus function and getting more control over Mars. I should say I am trying overtly to be a little bit more Venusian. Very necessary for me right now since my progressed Sun moved into Libra recently and my progressed Venus has been in a steady direct-after-a-lifetime of retrograde movement.

Synchronistically, the goddess showed up in my life through a friend who spontaneously guided me about color and makeup. It doesn’t sound like a biggie but it is for me. Because if there is one god I have downplayed in her overt expression in my person, it is Venus. I’m guilty of not honoring her enough. So now I’m making amends in little things I do.

I’ve been meaning to write about honoring the gods for years now. Because I understand that to have the kind of peaceful life I want, I must honor and appease all gods that live within me. I think it’s true of all of us. There are some functions that flow wonderfully for us and we invest in them and develop them to a high extent. Others we have an uncomfortable relationship with and we may express them erratically or with some unease. Hence we end up with a lopsided personality and thus a lopsided life. Not ideal. Unless, that’s what you want and, sometimes, that is what we want. Perhaps it’s my progressed sun in Libra but the word “balance” has become so important for me: in all aspects of my life.

I consciously work to balance and honor the gods within me and it is a continuous task. It is a task of a lifetime for all of us. One doesn’t need an astrologer or a therapist or deep conversations with best friends to understand where balance is off and needs to be redressed. But all of these help and so does introspection. Doing inner work: see what is happening through us, around us, to us and why it is so.

Steven Forrest says that we are the most powerful forces of creation in our own lives. And if you’re feeling or seeing a lack of balance, then you can take an active hand in correcting it. You can work out your own rituals to become aware of the inner dynamics playing in yourself and thus influencing your life. It doesn’t have to be rituals; it can be active participating in allowing energies a healthy way to express themselves.

If you have a highly aspected Mars that has a tendency to shoot before it thinks, what are you doing about it? Do you need to join a gym, go running every day or find friends who embrace your Martian side and can hold their own when needed?

I’ll be forever grateful to Terence Guardino for bringing me the world of Vedic astrology and recommending James Braha’s book. Vedic astrology has its own way of honoring the gods: through gem stones and chanting of mantras. I chanted while reading the Braha book and I found it a calming and meditative experience. It also made me consciously aware of my chart and what I need to always remember to focus on lest it gets out of hand in some way.

This blog post is my simple offering to you, to myself and to the gods who are alive within and around us. I’ll end with a quote from one of my favorite authors, Marc Olden: “To know and act is one. To know and not to act is not to know.”
