Love in the Time of Scorpio: Astrology for Autumn 2014

20 Oct 2014, 03:17 pm
The novel Love in the Time of Cholera, written by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez, tells the story of a woman who chooses.  In her youth, she falls in love with a dashing young man, and they carry on a secret exchange of love letters. Once her family discovers her affair, they move her away. Eventually she decides the tryst was just a romantic dream, and she agrees to marry a scientist, rational and dedicated to his work. Fifty years later, her husband dies. Once again, the suitor from her youth proclaims his love, and they spend their last years together. There’s something in the cosmic weather that evokes the themes of this story – love, dreams, practicality and choice. For the astrologically curious: A new Moon and Partial Solar Eclipse on Oct. 23 falls at 0 degrees Scorpio, with the planet Venus, who is close to her superior conjunction with the Sun. Saturn has been transiting Scorpio for the past several years, and is finally preparing to move on as this eclipse occurs. Dreamy Neptune is also slowing down to turn direct in a trine to the eclipse, as if he’s waiting in the wings. Eclipses herald the endings of things. The burning of a bridge so you can’t turn back to your old ways. With Venus in the mix, who you love, and how you love, are tossed on the threshing floor.  It is time to decide what works for you, and what doesn’t, on all levels. And that’s the complexity of the human condition. We are both mundane, physical creatures and spiritual, sublime ones.  How do we find was to meet the needs of all levels of ourselves, when sometimes those needs seem at odds?  Must we choose what’s practical, and expedient, or the promptings of the heart? Is there a path that allows for both needs to be honored? This is a question you must answer for yourself, as it defines who you are. For those willing to explore, this eclipse is an invitation to find those answers. After the eclipse, Mercury ends his three week retrograde on Oct. 25, asking us to pick up the pieces and get back on track. Then on Oct. 26, Mars enters no-nonsense, earthy Capricorn. This puts action oriented Mars in what’s called a “mutual reception” with sober Saturn. Mars lends his energy and courage for Saturn’s last days in Scorpio. If you have been putting off facing the fears dredged up by Saturn over the past few years, it’s just time do it, so you can move on to something new. Solar eclipses always occur at the new Moon, the beginning of the lunar month. New Moons are often auspicious times to begin implementing a change, but with an eclipse, it suggests the change has as much to do with letting go of the past as turning toward the future.  A full Moon on Nov. 6 at 14 Taurus will give you a hint about what new seeds are sprouting in your heart. If you have chosen the path of release, a full Moon on Nov. 22 at 0 Sagittarius may signal the start of your next adventure.
