Named in honor of Frank P. Israel (1946– ), Dutch astronomer in Leiden, on the occasion of his 51st birthday. Before moving to the Leiden Observatory he worked at the California Institute of Technology and at the European Space Agency. His fields of interest are radio astronomical observations of dense interstellar clouds in galaxies, in particular the study of mass concentrations in the center of galaxies. (M 31026) _ _.
