Also known as the Temple of Ramesses, the Abu Simbel temples are located on the upper Nile River in southern Egypt. Every Oct. 22 and Feb. 20, the rays of the sun would penetrate the sanctuary and illuminate the sculptures on the back wall, except for the statue of Ptah.
