Born in Okayama prefecture, Ogata Koan (1810-1863) was a medical doctor with knowledge of European medicine in the late Edo period. During 20 years of teaching he educated 1000 young people at the Tekijyuku school, the spirit of which has been followed by the medical school at Osaka University.
