Grégoire Chapuis (1761-1794) was a surgeon dedicated to educating the poor by establishing evening classes. As mayor of the city of Verviers, he promoted civil weddings. He was therefore accused of blasphemy by the prince-archbishop of Liège and put to death by beheading.
