An Indian princess and daughter of Powhatan, celebrated sachem and chief of the Chickahominy tribe of Virginia, Pocahontas (c. 1595–1617) developed a warm friendship for the English colonists and rendered them many services, including the rescue of their leader, Captain John Smith, from her father.
