German astronomer Johann Heinrich von Mädler (1794-1874) succeeded Struve as director of the Dorpat (Tartu) Observatory in 1840. Known with Fraunhofer for the first exact map of the moon Mappa selenographica (four volumes, 1834-1836), he continued Struve's program of observations of double stars.
