U.S. inventor Robert Fulton built a sailing ship/submarine called Nautilus in 1800. Jules Verne also used the name for the submarine in his 1869 novel Vingt mille lieues sous les mers. In 1955 the U.S.S. Nautilus became the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. (M 36129) _ _.
