Academia Istropolitana (“city on the Danube”) was the first university in today's Slovak territory and an ancient predecessor of Comenius University. The academy was founded by the Hungarian king Matej Korvín (Mathias Corvin) in Bratislava in 1465. The name was suggested by F. Devínsky, Comenius University rector.
