Keinosuke Miyairi (1865-1946), of Kyushu Imperial University, a pioneer in epidemiology, discovered that the snail now called “Miyairi-gai” is an intermediate host for transmission of shistosoma japonicum infection. This enabled schistosomiasis to be controlled. The name was suggested by S. Murayama and O. Muramatsu.
