Shimeichi Iwabu (b. 1914) became enthralled with total eclipses after witnessing his first in Hokkaido in 1963. Since then, he has taken part in solar-eclipse expeditions to every corner of the world. He witnessed the annular solar eclipse of China in 2010 on what was his 22nd expedition.
