Indian physicist C. V. Raman (1888-1970) showed the inelastic scattering of photons traversing a material. For his discovery of the so-called Raman effect he received the 1930 Nobel Prize in physics. The Raman spectroscopy helps to study atomic and complicated molecular structures.
