At the time of the Spanish conquest (1531–1539) the Inca state was a highly civilized and sophisticated empire. With Cuzco {see planet  (8279)} as the capital, it covered the southern part of modern Ecuador, all of Peru and Bolivia and the northern part of Chile. The main language spoken throughout the empire was Quechua. (M 47163) _ _.
