Named in honor of Charles A. Federer, Jr., founding editor of “Sky and Telescope” {see planet  (3243)}. In January 1940, Federer became editor of “The Sky”, a monthly popular astronomy magazine published since 1936 by the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. Then in November 1941, “The Sky” was combined with a similar publication, “The Telescope”, which was founded at Perkins Observatory in 1931 but since 1934 had been published by Harvard College Observatory. Federer became editor-in-chief of “Sky and Telescope” in 1964, a post he held until his retirement a decade later. (M 19339) _ _.
