Known in the twelfth century as Kolyvan, and later as Reval, the Finnic-speaking community became the northernmost member of the Hanseatic League in 1285, enjoying a strategic position for trade between Europe and Russia. Renamed Tallinn in 1918, it is now the largest city and capital of of modern Estonia.
